I have been searching for a green air freshener alternative for many years. Ever since I found out how dangerous and toxic these sprays are for our health, I have not purchased any. It’s interesting how after not using air freshener for so long, whenever I walk into a house that has been sprayed with Fabreze® or a bathroom that was just “freshened” with spray, I get dizzy and want to faint from the fumes.
Dangers of Air Freshener
So what is in that can of spray that we so innocently purchase to “refresh” and “clean” our homes? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that air fresheners contain four basic ingredients: formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, p- dichlorobenzene, and aerosol propellants. Air fresheners can actually cause death if ingested by children or animals.
Let’s figure out why these ingredients are poisonous for us. In 2011, the US National Toxicology Program reported that formaldehyde is “known to be a human carcinogen,” meaning it causes cancer. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that petroleum distillates can cause “irritation eyes, nose, throat; dizziness, drowsiness, headache, nausea; dry cracked skin; chemical pneumonitis (aspiration liquid).” The CDC also listed “eye irritation, swelling periorbital (situated around the eye); profuse rhinitis; headache, anorexia, nausea, vomiting; weight loss, jaundice, cirrhosis; in animals: liver, kidney injury; potential occupational carcinogen,” as possible side effects of p- dichlorobenzene. And the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection reports that cans of aerosol propellants can “contain hazardous chemicals, e.g. pesticides, oven cleaner, etc…[and] may be hazardous to human health.”
Natural Air Fresheners
With all the known toxic side effects of air fresheners, it’s great to find out that there are safe alternatives out there. For some time now, my family and I have been purchasing Air Therapy Spray. This mist neutralizes all odors, and it’s CHEMICAL-FREE, NON-TOXIC, NON-AEROSOL, and SAFE for you and the environment. It’s an environmentally safe, biodegradable, concentrated liquid, derived from a perfect blend of pure essential oils, distilled from the peels of oranges and limes, nothing else. This natural air freshner comes in two flavors – Air Therapy Spray Orange and Air Therapy Spray Silver Spruce.
All you really need is one or two sprays to freshen up a room, or you can spray it directly into an air vent to circulate the good smell. It lasts for about 2,000 sprays.
