You probably don’t drink tap water, but did you know that bathing in unfiltered water is just as dangerous? Your water company likely allows numerous toxins into your water supply in which you innocently bathe, or wash your child. While bathing, your inhale the chemical toxins through the steam, or the chemicals leech into the skin.
The Environmental Working Group stated a National Drinking Water Database where you can enter your zip code and look up the contaminants found in your water.
One of the most dangerous toxins in bath water is chlorine. Livegstrong.com explains that “You also inhale chloroform, a byproduct of chlorine, when you take a hot shower or bath… Warm water also further opens pores, so the combination of what your skin absorbs and your lungs inhale during a 10-minute shower is greater than the amount you would ingest drinking eight glasses of water from the same tap. In fact, studies at the University of Pittsburgh found less chemical exposure from ingesting chlorinated water than from showering or washing clothes in it. The study found that, on average, absorption through the skin was responsible for 64 percent of waterborne contaminants that enter the human body.”
The water company adds chlorine to shower and bath water to kill potential viruses and bacteria. However, chlorine has been found to cause many serious side effects, such as killing off the good bacteria that we need for digestion, eye and skin irritation and eczema. states that “as you shower or bathe, heat opens your pores, and some chlorine is absorbed. The combination of chlorine and hot water removes some of your skin’s natural oils. This can lead to dryness and cracking, which can lead to wrinkles.” Other research has indicated that chlorine can cause other, serious side effects, such as asthma and cancer.
So what’s a good bath water filter that will let you remove chlorine from bathwater? There are various shower filters on the market, but not a lot of bathtub filters. If you have a small child at home, you are likely running the bath every single day. Through lots of research, I have found that Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) actually kills off the choline in the bath water. “Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has recently been included in AWWA (American Water Works Association) Standard (AWWA, 2005b) as one of the methods for dechlorination of disinfected water mains,” according to InspiredLiving.com. The site goes on to say that the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has found that to remove chlorine from a medium size tub, you would need to put 1000mg of vitamin c. There are a couple of easy solutions for removing chlorine.
VITAMIN C DECHLORINATION BATH TABLETS
Vitamin C Dechlorination Bath Tablets are composed of ascorbic acid, citric acid and sodium bicarbonate. This powerful formula is designed to neutralize chlorine and chloramines in hot tub or spas, but can also be used in bath water. Drop one tablet in the bath, wait for minutes, and the chlorine should be removed.
VITAMIN C POWDER
I believe that the most affordable and easiest thing to do to remove chlorine from bath water is to drop pure Vitamin C Powder right into the tub.
You will need to put 1/4 of a teaspoon (1000mg) and add to the bath water. Wait four minutes, and then feel free to put your child in.
